The Best Trip Destinations for Halloween

Best trip Destinations for Halloween

There is nothing better for getting into the Halloween spirit, than a trip to one of United States’ most spooktacular destinations. Whether you plan your trip in October or November, these cities are sure to put you in the best fall mood. In this post, we share the top U.S. destinations for your perfect fall trip! From the largest apple orchards to the most haunted sites one could imagine, there are so many affordable trip destinations for Halloween to consider.

#1: Salem, Massachusetts

A wooden grey house surrounded by lush green trees in Salem, Massachusetts for a Halloween trip destination.

Also known as the home for the Salem Witch Trials, this small city outside of Boston is a perfect setting for the haunted heart. You can embark on the Bewitched After Dark Walking Tour, honor the victims at the Witch Trials Memorial, or follow the red line along the Salem Heritage Trail. It is the perfect trip destination for Halloween. If you are looking to take a break from the witch talk, the Punto Urban Art Museum is a great spot to see large scale murals that are also free to the public.

#2: New Orleans, Louisiana

A yellow house in New Orleans draped with orange fall decor.

Packed with a complicated history, New Orleans is no stranger to the after life. Since the city has a rich past of voodoo influence, there are a lot of great inexpensive activities to compliment this time of year. You can take a walking Ghost Tour of Jackson Square, visit one of the historic cemeteries, or even stay at one of the many haunted hotels. If you are willing to splurge a bit, there are tons of tarot readings for the brave heart as well. Oh, and make sure to indulge at one of the best NOLA beignet spots while you’re in the area!

#3: Charlottesville, Virginia

An overview shot of someone standing over apples at the Carter Mountain Apple Orchard in Charlottesville, Virginia.

If you are looking for a little less fear and a lot more fall, consider visiting Charlottesville, Virginia for one of the best apple orchards in the U.S. Carter Mountain Apple Orchard has over 25 acres of land to explore and plenty of adult fall beverages made with the fruits from their own farm! Make sure you try one (or a few) of their apple cider donuts before you head out! November is the best time to visit to avoid large crowds.

#4: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Closeup image of the Haunted House Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a Halloween trip destination.

The Haunted House Penitentiary in Philadelphia takes haunted houses to all sorts of new levels because it was previously an abandon prison– as if normal haunted houses aren’t horrifying enough. You have the option of visiting the lot during the day for the Prison Tour or at night for the Haunted House. Considered to be one of the largest haunted houses in the U.S., The Terror Behind the Walls house has six haunted attractions, which are all included in one admission price. Prices vary depending on the day, but you can get tickets as low as $20 if you book in advance. They also have special discounts days for students, families, and groups.

#5: San Francisco, California

Alcatraz in San Francisco, California Bay for Halloween trip destinations.

Keeping with the prison theme, we would be crazy not to mention one of the most famous prison tours in the world. San Francisco’s Alcatraz is a great trip destination for this Halloween time of year. Once a maximum security prison located on an island not far from the bay area, the tour begins with a ferry ride onto the island. The tour then walks you through prison cells and shares stories of what it was like for inmates living behind the bars. During the fall, they give this place a Halloween face-lift to add an additional spooky layer. Tickets to the Alcatraz are not cheap but it’s quite the experience.

Introducing local love market ✨

Honestly the perfect name for this monthly summer pop-up because it’s oozing with love and local talent!

Located at @honourcoffeempls every month with different vendors featured throughout the summer.

Got to meet so many amazing makers, artists, and entrepreneurs (many of which we hadn’t heard of yet!) and was blown away by the selection at this market.

Definitely one you’ll want to visit before summer ends!

🗓️Next one: July 26 @locallovemarkets

A 5.5 hour drive from the Twin Cities brought us to one of the Midwest’s most underrated hidden gems 🌲

@theporcupinemountains felt like a little taste of the West without leaving the Midwest! Lakes, overlooks, forests, and some seriously beautiful trails.

Adding this one to your weekend getaway list? 👀

We 👏🏾 did 👏🏼 that!

Some things are just better with your people…and Tough Mudder is 100% one of them!! We did the Twin Cities Tough Mudder for the first time and not only finished but had the best time doing it!!

Wunmi was 2.5 months postpartum and even that didn’t stop her from showing up, getting it done, and having fun 🤸🏾‍♀️💪🏾.

3 miles, 8 obstacles, a lot of mud!

The coolest part is that you work through the obstacles as a team - with the people you go with AND the strangers you meet along the way who become teammates for the day. The Tough Mudder culture is such a beautiful family, we love that we are now a part of it!

If you’re thinking of signing up for a Tough Mudder, consider this your sign to do it!!

Use code THRIFTY20 for 20% off all 2026 or 2027 Tough Mudder events. Save this so you don’t forget!

We’re hooked. Same time next year, and the year after that. 👯‍♀️
