Where to Stay
When visiting Queenstown, choosing the right spot for your stay is a key component to creating the perfect experience. Despite its relatively small size, it can be overwhelming to know where to stay in Queenstown.
During our memorable stint, we opted for the Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa —a haven that seamlessly blended comfort and coziness! Nestled right along the lake, it offered not only a retreat from the day’s adventures, but also a front-row seat to the town’s picturesque views.
We took the water taxi from the hotel port directly into town every day – a convenient mode of transportation that made it feel steps from Queenstown’s most lively parts.
Whether you seek the pulse of the city or the serene calmness of Lake Wakatipu, staying downtown proves to be the sweet spot for an unforgettable Queenstown escapade.
What to do
Active things to do in queenstown, New Zealand
Queenstown, New Zealand is filled with adventurous activities ready to be explored. Are you seeking something that will get your heart pumping? Or maybe a relaxing day at the spa? Either way, Queenstown offers a breadth of fun things to see and do.
• Skyline Gondola ride – Take the Gondola up the mountain for a terrific view of the town piercing between the many lakes. There is a restaurant, bar, and cafe at the top so you can sit and fully appreciate the lookout. I ordered the mulled wine and it was perfect for the cool day.
• Luge ride down the mountain – While you are on top the mountain, check out the luge rides! This is a must do experience if you like a little thrill! There are two courses to ride through. One is the scenic route, a bit slower allowing you to take in the views on your way down. The other is what we would equate to Mario Kart! With dips, turns, and tunnels it’s sure to get your heart rate up!
• Bob’s Cove – Spend some time appreciating the beauty that is Queenstown’s landscape. Bob’s Cove is a quick 30 minute hike, not far from the city. If you are looking for something a bit longer, you can continue from Bob’s Cove to Twelve Mile Delta Track for a 2-4 hour-long hike.
RELAXING THINGS TO DO IN QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND
• Winery in Gibbston – Queenstown is known as the winery region in New Zealand. Spend the afternoon checking out some of the many wineries in the Gibbston region of Queenstown. We did a tasting tour at the lovely Mt Rosa Winery. It included 5 wine tastings for only $19 NZD. Can’t beat it!
• Shop downtown Queenstown – For being a small town, we were blown away by the amount of shops and trendy boutiques that the city had to offer. You’ll find everything from seasonally relevant clothing stores, to ‘make your own’ fragrance shops. A great way to spend a quiet afternoon in Queenstown.
• Visit Arrowtown – If you have some extra time to spare, this charming town is only about 30 min away from Queenstown. There are buses and taxis that can take you right downtown. Make sure you pop in to Hyde cocktail bar while you’re in the area. It’s one of those spots that doesn’t have a menu. Instead, the bartenders whip up something based on what you’re feeling. So, what are you feeling?
• Kinross Winery – if you don’t have time to make it to the wine region of the area, Kinross is the winery that is located right in the city center. This spot brings in wine from the local wineries so you can still experience authentic New Zealand wine.
• Onsen Spa – Can’t say enough great things about the Onsen Spa experience. For $160 USD you get to enjoy a 45 minute soak in one of their private hot baths overlooking the Queenstown hills. After the soak, you get a 1 hour massage (also included in the price). This is the perfect experience to do with a partner or spouse as it makes for a very romantic setting!

As the sun sets, Queenstown transforms into a haven for libation lovers. The Pub on Wharf and the Irish charm of Pog Mahones, had us on our feet with live music all night.
For a more intimate setting, Eichardt’s Private Hotel boasts the best cocktails in town, although its cozy ambiance means it fills up quickly. Smiths is your go-to for craft beer, while Soda is a newer spot that offers a diverse menu and a trendy ambience.
